Level 1: Basic / "Trickle" Charging
- Power Source: Standard
120V AC household outlet.
- Speed: Adds roughly
3 to 5 miles of range
per hour.
- Best For: Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) or for low-mileage drivers with short daily commutes (under 40 miles) who can charge overnight.
A full charge can take 40-50+ hours for a BEV.
- Installation: Usually requires no special electrical work; most EVs come with a portable Level 1 cable.
Level 2: Fast AC Charging
- Power Source:
208V to 240V AC circuit (similar to a clothes dryer or oven).
- Speed: Adds roughly
12 to 60 miles of range per hour.
A full charge typically takes 4-10 hours.
- Best For: Daily home charging, workplaces, and public "dwell" locations like hotels or malls.
- Installation: Requires a dedicated 240V circuit and professional installation of either a heavy-duty NEMA outlet or a hardwired wallbox by a contractor like ABC Electric.
Level 3: DC Fast Charging (DCFC)
- Power Source: High-voltage
480V to 1,000V DC (Direct Current).
- Speed: Adds
60 to 200+ miles. Full Charging in about 20–60 minutes (to 80%). It bypasses the car's onboard converter to send power directly to the battery.
- Best For: Commercial, public stations, and long-distance travel corridors. Offers rapid "refueling" during long road trips or for high-turnover commercial fleets.
- Installation: High-voltage, Very complex installation requiring significant utility coordination & industrial-grade electrical infrastructure and often trenching or transformer upgrades, making it impractical for most homes.
